Sisters Jade and Marla don't have much in common aside from their dog Beezley. Jade can hear and Marla is deaf. Marla liked to sleep late read magazines text her friends and discuss deaf politics with her parents. Jade loves to cook with their dad and dance to loud songs on the radio.
The school year isn't too bad since Marla is away at Bradington but then she comes home for the summer. They both enjoy playing softball - on separate teams but it looks like it's going to be a long painful season when Jade and Marla end up on the same team. Read an excerpt from the book.
Every Friday we drive two and a half hours to Bradington where my sister Marla goes to residential school for the deaf. When I was little I told Mom on our trip home one Sunday that when I went to Bradington I hoped I would get to stay on the fourth floor just like Marla.
Mom looked at me like I was crazy. Silly " she signed. "You no go Bradington. You not deaf."
Of course I knew I could hear but what did that have to do with anything?"
